What First Aid Training Do I Need?

By Bill, posted

There are a variety of different first aid courses which vary in nature and duration. Sometimes it can be difficult deciding which is the most suitable for your own situation. Hopefully this guide can make things seem clearer.

Firstly what is my profession?

First aid courses can be broken down fairly easily based on a person's profession. Generally any person working with young children eg childminders would complete a paediatric based course. Standard everyday professions will typically complete an adult based emergency course that can vary in duration. Finally those who work within high risk industries eg construction may be required to complete a longer course (3 day).

Secondly what type of certificate do I require?

The second requirement for an individual / business to consider is the type of certificate which is required within their industry.

Child care workers usually need to meet the requirements of Ofsted and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Part of the requirement is based on guided learning hours. Nannies typically complete 6 Hour Paediatric First Aid which is practical based and covers their role. Childminders are considered in a position of more responsibility and therefore complete 12 Hour Paediatric First Aid which addresses non emergency situations and childhood illnesses.

The most popular choice for those who work with adults is an ‘Emergency First Aid Course’. This includes:

  • Office personnel
  • Shop workers
  • Leisure
  • Sports coaches

The qualification covers the most common accidents and illnesses that occur within the workplace which suits a wide range of professions and not solely the above. Certain courses will also cover child and infant protocol for peace of mind whilst at home. Many people walk away with life skills that can be used anywhere.

High risk industries will require a full length First Aid at Work course which typically adds up to 18 hours of learning. Examples can be found below:

  • Construction
  • Lone workers
  • Hospitality
  • Factories and warehouses

This also includes professions where there is a ratio of 100 people to one first aider. For example a firework display at a local golf club which has 500 people attending will require a minimum of five personnel qualified in an 18 hour First Aid at Work course.

Two thirds (12 hours) of this must be completed in the classroom; however there is flexibility to complete the final third (6 hours) via distance learning or within the classroom.

Hope that makes selecting your course a little easier.
