Different Approaches and Styles Within Teaching

Teaching and learning approaches are used to facilitate the learning process. They should be dynamic in nature, engage learners and adjusted within the confines of different groups.

Presentations

Interactive presentations such as powerpoint can help accompany verbal lectures. They may include video / audio clips which will help learners relate what they are hearing to the subject area. They can also provide a good way to present date such as graphs and statistics.

It is worth considering that although computer based presentations can be highly effective, they are not the only approach to teaching. Some teachers may over rely on them as use the presentation as a convenience, which may not be to the benefit of all the learners.

Group Work

Group work is generally heralded in the world of teaching as a way of getting individuals actively involved in a subject matter. They can help develop communication skills and build good morale within the classroom.

Teachers may need to be pick the different groups themselves, to adjust to the dynamics of the class. It is also important to make sure that group sizes are not too large, which may restrict certain individuals from contributing.

Discussions

Group discussions can be a good tool to break up a lecture topic or to find relevant experience within the classroom. The benefit is that all learners can have the chance to contribute and may learn additional information to the presentation.

Slight drawbacks could be that some learners may be shy, and unwilling to contribute. Leading to other learners dominating the discussions. Teachers also need to be aware of the discussion digressing and may need to focus the group at times.

There are a wealth of other learning approaches that can be utilized within lessons. Teachers just need to make sure that their approaches are fit for purpose and maximise the strengths and weaknesses of the given class.
