What is First Aid?

First Aid is a term that is widely used in public settings and within the workplace. However it can be interpreted in many different ways and could even seen as being misleading at times. Like in many aspects of life it could be more simple than some people like to believe.

Definition:

‘help given to a sick or injured person until full medical treatment is available’

Immediate Assistance

The first part of the definition relates to concept that an injured or sick casualty will always need immediate treatment. The first few minutes in an emergency could prove crucial. Localised help can remove the risk of dangers, get help and provide an eyewitness account of events.

First Aiders are trained to take control of a scene and identify what is going on within the environment. They are also trained to relay the correct information to the emergency services, which is important when others around could be panicking.

Arrival of Medical Professionals

First Aid in the Workplace Courses presume the arrival of the paramedics within 20 minutes of a reported emergency. As a result First Aiders will need to fill in the time gap and give the appropriate care to the casualty. They are not expected to assume the role of a doctor or trained medic and are only expected to do their best.

The below table outlines the common conditions and responses that could be used.

Breathing - Regularly check and maintain an open airway. CPR if not breathing.

Bleeding - Search the body for wounds and maintain pressure until help arrives

Unconsciousness - Place in recovery position and gather as much information as possible

Anaphylaxis - Use medication and check breathing regularly
