Lesson plans help teachers outline the content, structure and delivery of forthcoming sessions. They are a useful tool for teachers but ultimately learners will reap the rewards of well organised lessons.
Part of planning for your micro teach session involves creating a lesson plan to cover the 15 minute period. The example lesson plan below shows how the different columns can be used to describe what is going on at the various stages of the lesson.
Aims and objectives are a critical part of teaching and can be found at the top of the plan. It can only help to outline these at the start of the lesson to give clarity to students.
Explain exactly how long you will be spending on each part of the lesson in minutes if possible. For example the introduction consisting of the trainer name, subject areas and objectives may take approximately two minutes.
Describe the activities that you will be doing at each point of the lesson. This could include an introduction, demonstration, practical task and anything else that is going to involve the teacher.
Similar to the above but instead describe what activities the students will be doing at the various points of the lesson. Examples include group discussions, puzzles or a practical task.
Teaching often incorporates a wide range of resources like power point presentations, work packs, videos and textbooks. Include these here so they are not forgotten within the lesson.
Inclusive learning gives everyone the opportunity to be involved at all points within a lesson. In light of this it is important to make a note in the planning process of how this will be achieved. Examples include encouraging group work so students mix and modifying resources to ensure that they meet the needs of all the learners within the class.
Assessments can help demonstrate that learners have met the criteria. Include an end of lesson quiz, multiple choice exam or observation during a practical activity.
Embed literacy, numeracy and ICT within the micro teach lesson and within teaching in general. Don't go out of way to include these but you will find natural links e.g reading from textbook or writing down thoughts in a discussion.
Get in touch with the team if you need a template like the example which makes planning out a lesson far easier. Good luck with your lesson planning.
