False Widow Spider Bites

By Bill, posted

The false widow spider has migrated to Europe and has been dubbed Britain's most dangerous spider. This could be attributed to warmer conditions and the spiders may have inadvertently been imported from more exotic areas of the globe.

The false widow spider bite can be dangerous to humans and in rare instances fatal. However it should be noted that as of today's date no fatalities have ever occurred within the UK. Some basic first aid knowledge can go a long way when helping someone who has been bitten…

False Widow Spider

Helpful Hint

The false widow spider can be recognised by its distinctive cream markings and bulbous brown body. Look out for its reddish-orange legs and love of dark warm places.

Recognition

Bites often cause minor reactions and numbness in the affected area. In more serious cases it can cause severe discomfort and swelling at the site of the bite.

Small numbers of the population may suffer an allergic reaction which could create burning sensations and in the most serious of cases chest pains.

Treatment

Firstly wash the bite area to remove any venom that may still be present. Inspect the bite area for any sign of swelling, pain and infection. Reassure the casualty throughout as they may be anxious about the bite and suffering from the fear of the unknown.

If the redness and pain does not subside in the next few hours then seek qualified medical assistance.

Call 999/112 immediately if the casualty ever shows any signs of breathing difficulties. False widow bites can occasionally be fatal due to swelling of the internal airways. Never be afraid to call the emergency services as that is what they are there for.
