Enjoy the sun, avoid the sunburn

By Bill, posted

Spring has finally sprung and the sun is finally shining. When you’re outside enjoying the weather it can be easy to forget the power of the sun’s rays, leading to painful sunburn.

Sunburn is caused by overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, commonly from the sun. Sunburn can occur in less than 15 minutes of exposure, however signs of sunburn often take between 2 to 6 hours to show. Pain is usually most extreme 6 to 48 hours after exposure.

Symptoms of sunburn vary from person to person depending on skin type. Typically minor sunburn causes the skin to be slightly red and tender however in more serious cases blistering can occur. In extreme cases symptoms can include fever, chills, nausea, vomiting and fainting.

The best treatment is to act as quickly as possible to prevent further skin damage. Drink plenty of fluids to re-hydrate the body and use a cool compress on the affected area. Products containing Aloe Vera and Vitamin E will help reduce inflammation of the skin. If the sunburn is severe then ensure you seek professional medical attention.

Prevention is better than cure so ensure you use a sunscreen with a high SPF, applying it 15 to 30 minutes before exposure to the sun, for the best protection. Remember “Slip-Slop-Slap” - slip on a top, slop on some sunscreen, slap on a hat and seek shade.
