Facts
• Heart disease claims around 200,000 lives each year and around 720,000 people are living with heart failure in the UK today
• Cardiac arrest is where the heart stops working suddenly and unexpectedly
• Abnormality in the hearts electrical system (arrhythmia) is life threatening and needs immediate treatment. The most common form of arrhythmia is known as ventricular fibrillation (VF) where the heart beat is in such a chaotic state that it is unable to pump blood around the vital organs – the brain in particular
• Death will occur in minutes if immediate treatment is not given
• The defibrillator is the only proven method which is effective in treating VF
• You should not be alarmed about using an AED – no harm can come to you or the casualty if used correctly. AED training can teach you a simple universal method
• The AED will not allow to you to shock a casualty that doesn’t require it
• The only effective way of treating a cardiac arrest is by using a defibrillator
• For each minute that defibrillation is delayed, the chances of casualty recovering are reduced by 10%
